Part 10: Your Past Does Not Determine Your Future

… unless you let it.

Friends, you may have heard that the best way to determine a future action is by judging a past action. That doesn’t have to be true, especially when God is the author and creator of your future.

I spoke about Grace in my last blog and today I want to go a step further and tell you that Grace isn’t just something you give yourself on your current journey. It’s a gift you give yourself to help you move past your past. Let me explain.

You remember the time you started a weight loss plan, had the right amount of gumption to stick to it and lose weight. You remember feeling great in your skin and your confidence was at an all-time peak.

Somehow, as time progressed, those pounds and inches found their way back … and may have had a few extra friends with them.

Now, you’re upset with yourself for “allowing” yourself to “slack” and undo all the great work you did in the past. You beat yourself up for the “lack of will power” to keep the weight off. You’ve even tried over and over again to lose the weight the way you did the time you felt most successful. You keep telling yourself “When I do (fill in the blank) diet and plan I know I can lose weight.”

Friend, I am so proud of you for all you accomplished in the past! I know it takes a lot to get your body and mind in gear to lose weight. Not only did you lose weight, now you KNOW your body is equipped to lose weight.

However, the way you lost weight in the past is NOT how you are going to maintain weight loss now.

Why is this?

You’ve heard me say it before and it’s true. How you lose weight is how you have to maintain your weight loss. If the diet or exercise plan, no matter how wonderful it is, does not create a foundation you can make a part of your consistent lifestyle, you will find yourself in a place of weight regain … and eventually … weight shame.

Allowing yourself to invest your mental and emotional energy into fantasizing about “the way you lost weight before” and “if you could only do it again” is not helpful.

Think of this concept like you would think of driving a car. You can’t get to your destination in a car while constantly looking only in the rearview mirror. If you do, you will find yourself swerving all over the road, hitting barriers along the way, and maybe even running off the road completely.

Stop looking backwards to get where you want to go.

You can use your past as a learning experience. You can take a glance in the rearview mirror from time-to-time when you need to. But, to get to the place you want to be on your weight loss journey, you’re going to have to do something different.

How to Stop Recycling Your Past Weight Loss

There are two simple steps you can take to stop going in circles with your weight loss.

Start Getting Curious about the Future You

Who is this future you?

Well, you may already know her … or at least who you would like her to be. She’s the you who has lost weight and is in the weight loss maintenance stage. She’s the you that has found a weight loss plan that she is able to maintain as a part of her normal, daily lifestyle. She’s the you that understands her past does not dictate her future and practices sufficient grace on herself.

Get to Know the Future You

Now that you’ve gotten curious about the future you, get to know her.

She’s lost weight.

She’s maintaining her weight loss.

What does she eat for lunch? What’s the easiest meal she enjoys because it tastes great and is easy to access?

How does she feel and react to a plate of warm, chocolate chip cookies emerging from the oven?

What is her response to a friend bringing her a hot apple fritter, fresh from the local bakery … when she knows she isn’t hungry?

Get to know this future you so you have have a clear picture of how she reached her weight loss goal and how she manages to make maintenance a lifestyle.

Friend, your future YOU is waiting for you to begin to behave like her BECAUSE behaving like her at her success is HOW you are going to become her. You don’t have to do everything at one time. You just have to take the first step and every single step afterwards gets you one step closer to the future you that has successfully lost weight and is successfully managing her weight loss.
