There's Always More

A question I get asked a lot is, “How do I stick to my plan/ eat well when I go on vacation or have events?”

When my clients ask me about this, I usually find out it comes down to this line of thinking…

“I don’t want to plan because I don’t want to say no to anything I might really WANT to eat/drink. I want to be able to enjoy myself.

Can you relate? I can.

Believe me, when I say, I still struggle with this mentality.

Here is what happens in my head during parties/events/ vacations:

  • “They brought your favorite bars that you never get to have. You better have one now.”
  • “You won’t come back to this restaurant ever again, so order what you really want.”
  • “These friends hardly ever come over, so why not just enjoy eating whatever they are eating.”
  • “It will be a long time before you’re on vacation again, so just don’t worry about it.”

I’m going to just say this bluntly.

All this thinking comes from fear.

The fear of missing out.

The absolute worst time to make a decision is when you’re feeling FEAR.

Why?

Fear is from the enemy. Fear clouds your judgment and encourages you to quickly respond rather than listening to the Spirit.

Desire without knowledge is not good, and whoever makes haste with his feet misses his way. Proverbs 19:2

The desire to eat, eat for any other reason than fueling our bodies, needs to have “knowledge”. That means we should pray, plan, and think about the decision we make. When we don’t take the time to do so, our “haste” makes us miss the way God wants us to walk.

Satan knows this. That’s why he “feeds” our minds with thoughts that lead us to fear.

But here is the truth, we NEVER miss out unless we choose to see it that way. God is supplying us with every need and more.

And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19

Fear the Lord, you his holy people, for those who fear him lack nothing. The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing. Psalm 34: 9-10

Protect me, O God; I trust in you for safety. say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; all the good things I have come from you.” … You, Lord, are all I have, and you give me all I need; my future is in your hands. How wonderful are your gifts to me; how good they are! Psalm 16:1-2,5-6

Relief from a feeling.

That’s all we really want when we crave and focus on food.

Relief from feeling the desire of something I want NOW, but I don’t really want long term.

Relief from feeling out-of-place by not eating what the rest of the group is eating.

Relief from the feeling of missing out…

If you remember what I’ve taught you about feelings, they come from our THINKING. What we think about we get to choose!

If they come from what we choose to think, then the answer aligns our thinking with the Spirit. The Spirit provides us with feelings of love, joy, peace, patience, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). Those feelings don’t cause us to run to food to feel better.

Let’s think like the Spirit then. Here are some thoughts that I use to remind myself of what Spirit is leading me to:

  • This isn’t my last chance.
  • I can always have some later if I really want it and plan to get it.
  • God wants better blessings in my life other than food.
  • Food from God’s hand feels so much better than food from men’s hands.
  • This food isn’t the best part of this party/event/ get-together, the people are.
  • You’re good, Amanda. Your temple doesn’t need this.
  • I think I've had enough of this worldly pleasure for now.
  • There is always more. I don’t want more, though. I want the best that God offers.

I leave you with one last, straight from scripture thought…

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2
