You aren’t new to the weight loss struggle.
You’ve tried countless diets and exercise routines. You’ve even been successful at shedding some pounds.
… but those long-lost pounds seem to keep finding their way back to you and you are just plain tired of this seemingly endless battle.
Friend, you can lose weight and keep it off by learning the top 20 things that no one tells you about how to truly be successful on your journey.
This is part 7 of a 20-part blog series that will give you a strong foundation of strategy you need to lose weight, keep it off, and start living the life you were born to live!
Some of what I share will be opposite of what all the diet gurus tell you, so read on with an open and prayerful mind and let God work on you from the inside out of your health and fitness journey!
Wait a minute … didn’t I say you don’t have to start today?
You are sharp! I did say that, and I did mean it. You don’t have to start today, especially if your motivation for starting today is coming from a place of immense pressure to lose weight and lose it NOW!
Decisions made under pressure don’t allow us to show up in the right state of mind that we need to start, finish, and maintain a journey … especially a journey as important as the one you are on.
Let me clarify by asking you a question.
How many times have you found yourself falling into food temptation and justifying it within your mind by saying “I’ll just start tomorrow … I’ll do better tomorrow … tomorrow will be easier?”
My guess is you’ve faced this food debacle more times than you can count.
There is something extremely glorious about the idea of starting over with a fresh new day, but, in all honesty, we have given the idea of “tomorrow” way too much power … power it can’t possibly possess. I’ll tell you why.
You simply don’t know what tomorrow is going to bring your way. In fact, neither you or I are promised tomorrow.
I want to share a powerful scripture with you that really brings the “I’ll start tomorrow” idea into perspective.
“And now I have a word for you who brashly announce, ‘Today - at the latest, tomorrow - we’re off to such and such a city for the year. We’re going to start a business and make a lot of money.’ You don’t know the first thing about tomorrow. You’re nothing but a wisp of fog, catching a brief bit of sun before disappearing. Instead, make it a habit to say, ‘If the Master wills it and we’re still alive, we’ll do this or that.” James 4:13-15 (MSG)
So, while I have shared with you the importance of “not starting today” if your motivation is out of a place of rush and pressure, pushing off your health journey is also not a good idea.
Too often we are forced to live and move in a place of extremes.
“I have to start right now!”
“I’ll just start tomorrow.”
I want to help you take your mind out of living within these extremes to a place of balance.
This place of balance starts with allowing yourself to pause, take a breath, and give yourself room to think about what you want and why you want it.
If you begin your weight loss journey motivated by pressure, chances are you won’t have the right mindset to maintain your weight loss.
If you push your weight loss journey off, even for just one day, you are pushing off what God has for you.
Let me present an example for you … all you chip lovers out there will be able to relate.
Say you have found yourself opening up a bag of your favorite chips and snacking away. Before you know it, you’ve snacked away half the bag. (How many chip lovers out there have been in this situation before? I know I have!)
You now have a decision to make, and your brain is in full tug-o-war mode over your thinking process when it comes to food. You begin feeling guilt and shame for snacking away half a bag of chips and your thoughts are running rampant in your mind.
“Go ahead and finish the bag. You might as well, you’ve already eaten half the bag.”
Then, the justification.
“Yeah, I can just enjoy the rest of this bag because I’ll start fresh tomorrow.”
I want to challenge that thinking, because friend, you don’t have to live in an “all or nothing” state of mind.
What if you took one of these routes instead?
Starting today, starting right now, doesn’t mean you have to take a gigantic step. A small step in the direction toward your weight loss goal is the perfect size step to help you begin gaining momentum.
One tiny step taken right now, in this moment, is immensely powerful in breaking old habits and creating new ones that align with your desired health journey. One tiny step, taken in this moment, also aligns with God’s Word and plan for your life.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
Right now, at this moment, you are a new creation. You don’t have to wait until tomorrow to begin what God has given you grace to start now. His newness is available now. And now. And now.
Friend don’t begin your weight loss journey because of guilt and shame.
Don’t begin your weight loss journey because of fear and pressure.
Begin because God loves you and you love yourself. Begin because God has given you grace, forgiveness, and a new start with every single breath you take.
