The Fun of Taking Care of Yourself

Want to know something fun?

HAVING FUN!

I came to the realization the other day… I don’t have that much fun.

  • There are all these big goals I’m working towards.
  • There are a lot of fights and squabbles between my kids.
  • There is a chaotic pandemic going on.
  • There are some serious issues that need to be addressed.

I use these all as excuses to stay in a serious, un-fun mood.

God gives us warning against this though.

A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. Proverbs 17:22

A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit. Proverbs 15:13

Now don’t get me wrong.  I don’t think we can have fun all the time. If we didn’t have the boring, mundane, or frustrating we wouldn’t know what fun is.

But, being happy, having joy, both of these are good for the spirit.

Since having fun doesn’t come “naturally” to me, I decided to make a list of joyful things I could do.  Here is what I came up with so far:

  1. Do a cartwheel (even if it does make you a little dizzy)
  2. Tell a joke to the kids
  3. Make up silly names for the kids and call them those for a day
  4. Have PJ day in our house
  5. Dance
  6. Whistle
  7. Walk in the mud
  8. Build a fort

There are many more things I could add to the list.  (Feel free to share some of yours with me!)

I also want to offer another way to have fun.

Take care of yourself.

Now, I know for some of you eating well, exercising and sleeping doesn’t seem like fun.  But, neither does changing up my schedule for me to fit in these new activities with my kids.

At least not at first.

Not until I see and feel all the benefits.

I don’t like changing up my routine, until I’m done laughing with my kids after we’ve shown off our best dance moves.  I don’t like stopping what I’m doing, until I see the huge grins after I’ve squirted Redi-whip into their mouths.

So often I stop myself from getting to theses perks because…

“It takes too much time.”

“I have more important things to do.”

“I don’t feel like it.”

How often do you those same excuses from stopping yourself having fun in taking care of yourself?

I’m raising my hand.  I’ve been there…

It’s such a tragedy though. Why do we stop ourselves from getting to the perks…

Like the pleasure of being able to go into any store and try on clothes, the joy of being able to run around with your kids, the blessing of decreased pain, the excitement of just feeling good in your skin!

There is fun in moving your body, eating well and connecting with God.  But you have to choose to look for it.  You have to choose to see it and take a hold of it.

God is freely giving it to YOU!!

I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. John 10:10

So go ahead! Claim it!  Dance with joy that God wants this for you!

He will yet fill your mouth with laughter, and your lips with shouting. Job 8:21

Have more fun taking care of you.

Which will just encourage you to do it more.

Having fun more often means even more joy coming!
