Things were just getting good, becoming easier…
Then I started over-eating again.
What is wrong with me? Why is this so hard?
This was me about 2 years ago. A lot of times people ask me about how I became a coach.
Let me tell you a little story about that.
I had a deep desire to be thin. I would get to a healthy weight, but then it seemed like a week later I was putting the pounds back on.
It's like I got to this goal and then I fell back into my old patterns. Then my actions did not fall in line with what I said I wanted.
Since, I seem to continue to sabotage myself, I thought something was wrong with me. I thought this may just be my struggle forever.
Until I realized something. God didn’t NOT want me to struggle forever. He wanted me to conquer, WITH HIM.
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. Romans 8:37
See, for so long I was just focused on the food, the exercise, the scale. I had a relationship with God, but not when it came to my body.
I didn’t realize that I thought I should be the one that figures this out and fight against it. I had thoughts like, "I put myself into this mess, so I needed to be the one to get me out."
Thoughts like those kept me stuck, in this never ending pattern of gaining and losing.
I knew there had to be a better way.
That's when I went searching. First, I went looking out in the world. I thought it would have the answers for me. Until, I stumbled upon something that opened my eyes.
It opened my eyes to what was going on in my head...my thinking!
So many people, including me, ignore their thoughts. We don’t think our thoughts really matter. We know have these sentences in our brain, but we don’t understand the impact of them. Since we have approximately 60,000 thoughts a day, we don’t even really notice some of them any more.
But they are important. What we think, we become.
As someone thinks within himself, so he is. Proverbs 23:7
Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts. Proverbs 4:23
Why? Because we can think thoughts according to the Spirit or we can dwell on thoughts (lies) that come from the enemy. How we choose determines how we live our lives; what actions we take.
I realized I needed to become of aware of what I was thinking after that. Not only become aware, but also make a choice. Either I could align my thinking with God’s word (His “thinking”) or I could choose to think the lies the enemy was feeding me.
The enemy is out to destroy.
So, I decided on the latter.
How did I become a coach? Well, long story short, I realized that this world's current way of thinking about losing weight wasn’t working. The world focuses on all the actions (exercise, eating, food, etc.).
Our actions are not the root of the problem.
Do you guys ever have those weeds that seem to vine out and you can never find the root? If or when you do find the root and try to pull it, it doesn’t come out? So, the weed just keeps growing back, continuing the problem.
Same goes with weight loss.
You can take all the actions to lose weight, but if those actions are coming from a place of despising or punishing yourself, they will never last. Or if they come from a place of you “have to” do them, they won’t sustain themselves.
Long, sustained natural, healthy weight comes from thinking thoughts about how God gave you this GIFT of your body. He even calls it a temple (1 Corinthians 6:19). It comes from knowing God put here so you can experience joy and thinking you are worth having it. It sustains itself from thinking thought of “I want to do this. Not only for me but for ___________” (you fill in the blank).
Because, those thoughts, right there, will lead you to the actions of eating well, moving your body and listening to your emotions. All of which will help you lose and maintain your weight.
Those are the thoughts that align with God.
